IFBC: speak to me of scifi/fantasy that does not make me stabbity.

(guidelines: i've already read almost everything Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, Verne, and Card have written. I'm not such a fan of Phillip K Dick, Gibson, Tolkien, or any of the Herberts. There is not enough spiked kool-aid in the world to make me start on Robert Jordan. I love short story collections.)

Marion Zimmer Bradley, but I wouldn't start with Mists of Avalon, actually.

Most anything in the Darkover series, but a few of them are really awful, so be careful. I'd recommend The Heritage of Hastur, The Shattered Chain, The World Wreckers or Hawkmistress, to start with (it's one of those century-spanning series that weren't written in order, and so it doesn't really matter where you start, but if you want the very first, it's Darkover Landfall. Again, though, be careful, Landfall's pretty good, but some of the other early ones are pretty poor quality).

Also, if you can find it, MZB's Survey Ship is incredible, and something I'd really recommend to fans of Orson Scott Card (jeez, what is it with sci-fi authors and their three names?).
