IFBC: speak to me of scifi/fantasy that does not make me stabbity.

(guidelines: i've already read almost everything Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, Verne, and Card have written. I'm not such a fan of Phillip K Dick, Gibson, Tolkien, or any of the Herberts. There is not enough spiked kool-aid in the world to make me start on Robert Jordan. I love short story collections.)

Spinrad - The Void Captain's Tale or The Men in the Jungle (the latter if you don't mind cannibalism)
Bester - The Demolished Man (my favorite sci-fi)
Clarke - Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (an all time favorite book. Big, I wish it were bigger)

i was watching the Sand Kings eps of the Outer Limits the other night (based on the story by George R.R. Martin) which is actually what made me think of posting this.

Is Demolished Man similar to Dick's Minority Report? It sounds like they might deal with the same stuff.

Demolished Man is older and smarter. It won the first Hugo Award. It taught me to read very, very carefully.

It's back in print after a fifteen-year absence. Bester died in the 80's and left all rights to his favorite bartender, who let it go out of print. We all had to wait for that guy to drop dead.

I still carry my old copy around with me. Best last line in a book, ever.
